HOW TO HELP A CLUMSY CHILD
Lisa A Kurtz,
Jessica Kingsley Publishers
ISBN 1843107546, £12.95
Star Rating: 3/5
Kurtz presents her extensive knowledge of the principles of motor development in an accessible manner, writes Sheena Thomas.
The use of comprehensive tables and clear examples allows the reader to distinguish between normal and abnormal motor development. Another theme concerns the debate on the merits of early intervention.
There are useful practical teaching strategies that parents and professionals can use to help the "clumsy" child at home and in school as well as reviews of a wide range of therapies.
The main shortcoming of the book for a British audience is that the extensive information regarding professional help, contacts, legislation and tests is all US-based.
Sheena Thomas is research and information manager for Include - an organisation that works with young people at risk.
