Judicial review of teenager's detention

Birmingham Council is facing a judicial review for alleged failings in its duty of care towards a 16-year-old girl currently on remand awaiting trial for murder.

Lawyers for the girl, accused of murdering a 78-year-old man last November, told the High Court the council had failed to provide suitable support and accommodation, necessary for a successful bail application.

Her case is being supported by the Howard League for Penal Reform, which argues that she has a right to live in the community, and that her detention may not be lawful.
