THE WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN IN THE UK

Edited by Jonathan Bradshaw and Emese Mayhew, Save the Children Fund ISBN I84187101X, £19.95

STAR RATING: 5/5

This updated and expanded second edition consists of a number of papers covering various aspects of children's well-being, such as poverty, education, child care and housing. It adds to the picture of children's lives built up in the previous publication by including, for the first time, information on children's rights, asylum seekers, children with learning difficulties and children with special educational needs, writes Anne Burnage.

Though the book provides valuable statistics on children's lives it is not just a statistical review. It also includes interesting discussions and analysis, and a fascinating insight into children's experiences of life in contemporary society.

This book will be a valuable resource for all those who work with children as well as students, teachers and researchers.

I would recommend it without hesitation as it not only helps us to better understand the context in which children live but also provides a basis for future planning.

Anne Burnage is deputy director, Catholic Children's Society
