'Troublemaker' expert honoured

'Troublemaker' expert honoured A leading authority in child poverty research has expressed his "complete surprise" at being awarded a CBE in the Queen's birthday honours.

Jonathan Bradshaw, professor of social policy at the University of York, said he found it difficult to square the honour with the fact he had "always been thought of as a bit of a troublemaker".

But he added: "Of course, it is very nice that child poverty is being recognised as an important issue by the powers that be."

Former Portsmouth Council director of social services Rob Hutchinson was also awarded a CBE, for services to children and families. He said: "There are probably thousands of people who work with children who would be equally if not more deserving of this honour."

Christine Walby, former director of social services in Solihull and Staffordshire, was awarded an OBE for her work in developing Welsh children's charity Tros Gynnal, previously The Children's Society in Wales.
