Opposition to the government's stance on antisocial behaviour should not ignore the concerns of people living in disadvantaged areas, a leading academic said this week.

Professor Suzanne Fitzpatrick, Joseph Rowntree professor of housing policy at York University, told the National Regeneration Convention that the government's antisocial behaviour policies often reflected the wishes of people in deprived areas.

She said: "However uncomfortable people feel about the government's antisocial behaviour agenda it does address some of the things that preoccupy people who live in urban poverty."

Fitzpatrick told the conference in Sheffield that it was the top priority in choosing housing for people in disadvantaged areas.

She added: "Antisocial behaviour is often talked about in terms of social cohesion but it's as much a social justice agenda."
