Refugee dispersal should be broader

Small areas may no longer be forced to take large numbers of asylum seekers.

A Home Office spokesperson said the National Asylum Support Service was re-acquiring accommodation and that new contracts would allow a more even spread of asylum seekers throughout cities and towns.

Under the first set of contracts, accommodation in some towns and cities was concentrated in small areas.

The news comes as Labour MP George Mudie said his constituency, Leeds East, was unable to cope with the number of asylum seekers being placed there and called for the dispersal policy to be reviewed.
