Your feature in 0-19's July issue about sex and relationships
education eloquently highlights the problems of how the subject is
delivered in our schools. While some schools responsibly emphasise
the importance of SRE within their curriculum, others do not.
My daughter is 15 years old and gay. Fortunately we have a good
relationship so she can ask me anything she wants to about sex. But
while I am able to offer her all the support I can regarding her
sexuality, her school is not. Lesbian and gay sex and relationships
were barely covered in the sex education classes my daughter had,
leaving her feeling ostracised and isolated.
Until schools address the sex education needs of at least one in 10
of their pupils then my daughter will not be the last gay young
person in the education system to feel like this.
