A group of MPs and the Refugee Council have called for failed Zimbabwean asylum seekers to be allowed to work to avoid destitution.

The council and the all-party parliamentary group on Zimbabwe said failed asylum seekers had been left without support since the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal ruled in October that it was unsafe for them to return.

Kate Hoey, chair of the group, said: "There are Zimbabweans I know who have been reduced to destitution within the past few weeks even though they have the skills we really need in this country, such as teaching and nursing."
