Ten foster carers were recognised in this year’s New Year’s Honours List, alongside the heads of several children’s charities.

Roger Singleton, who recently retired from the post of chief executive of Barnardo’s, was awarded a knighthood for his work with children, while Susan Daniels, chief executive of the National Deaf Children's Society was awarded an OBE for her efforts to improve the lives of children with disabilities.

OBEs also went to Dr Bronwen Cohen, chief executive of Children in Scotland, and Jennifer Griffiths, chair of the Connexions Surrey Partnership board.

The 10 foster carers from across the country were awarded MBEs, as were youth worker Christopher Oliver and former youth worker Audrey Flash. Meanwhile, headteachers featured prominently throughout the list for their contribution to children’s education.
