Campaigners are trying to amend proposed laws that would allow staff from private companies, rather than immigration officers, to carry out dawn raids on asylum-seeking families earmarked for removal from the country.

Lisa Nandy, a policy advisor at The Children’s Society, said the charity was very concerned about the plans.

It is trying to get MPs to table amendments to the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Bill, which contains the proposals, to find out what child protection safeguards would be in place.

The charity argues that any employees who come into contact with children should have undergone enhanced Criminal Records Bureau checks.
