The president of the Association of Directors of Social Services says the body's members have welcomed plans to split it.

Julie Jones said the proposal would be discussed in detail at the ADSS executive group's annual policy event this week.

It will be one of several key issues to be debated at the 24-hour gathering, along with the forthcoming white paper on social care and health and the government's controversial education plans.

Jones said association members had mostly reacted positively to the proposals for it to team up with the Confederation of Children's Service Managers and the Association of Directors of Education and Children's Services to form a new organisation representing children's services leaders (news, 15 December). The move would leave an adults' services body that will look at the wider well-being agenda.

"The response is that it's the right time to be having this debate," said Jones. "There's also a strong message that we must focus on both the children's and the adults' agenda."
