The process of registration is to be extended to the 750,000 care workers looking after vulnerable adults and children, Liam Byrne will announce today.
Speaking at a Skills for Care conference , the care services minister will ask the General Social Care Council to start the process that leads to registration.
Byrne has decided that the workforce must become more professional to ensure the public has confidence in it and to ensure the challenges set in the health and social care white paper are met.
“Registration is about public safety,” he said. “It will allow us to train our care workers to look after our vulnerable people properly.”
Byrne will also announce a £600K joint research project with Comic Relief into elder abuse.
