The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has welcomed the High Court ruling clearing Sir Roy Meadow of serious professional misconduct.

The General Medical Council ruled last July that the paediatrician should be struck off the medical register after his evidence led to the wrongful conviction of Sally Clark for murdering her baby sons.

But today Mr Justice Collins backed Meadow’s appeal against the ruling after his QC Nicola Davies argued that he should never have been struck off the register.

A statement from the RCPCH said the the decision was a welcome result for Meadow and every paediatrician and doctors in general.

“If the original decision had stood there is a real danger that doctors across all specialities would have become reluctant to undertake vital expert witness work.

“We hope that today’s decision will give confidence back to paediatricians, who responsibility and role is so important in the protection of children and who can contribute so much in the position of expert witnesses,” the statement concluded.
