More schools should work with police to tackle youth crime and improve pupil behaviour, the government said today.
Children’s minister Beverley Hughes and Home Office minister Hazel Blears launched new guidelines designed to help expand the Safer Schools partnership scheme. Launched in 2002, the initiative allocates dedicated police officers to schools.
“These are vital opportunities to identify young people likely to become victims or offenders. Early preventive action allows the needs of the young person to be addressed. Such interventions can only be successful where there is community partnership between the police and schools, health, social services, children’s trusts, local housing, local authorities and the voluntary sector,” said Rod Morgan, Youth Justice Board chair.
