Northern Ireland children's commissioner Nigel Williams died yesterday at home, his office has announced. He was diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

"The commissioner’s staff and his many friends here - in particular our youth panel - will greatly miss his inspiring leadership and vitality,” said acting commissioner Barney McNeany.

The commissioner’s work will continue, added McNeany.

“Nigel was very clear that the work he led to promote and safeguard the rights and best interests of children and young people and our focus on them should continue unabated,” he said.

Williams became commissioner in 2003. His achievement included an investigation into vetting in Northern Ireland, a review of speech and language therapy, and direct work with children and young people.

He previously founded charity Childnet International, focusing on promoting the rights and best interests of children on the internet, and also served as a Liberal Democrat councillor on Southwark Council in London.
