Vulnerable people who are unable to make decisions for themselves will have a legal right to advocacy support under government proposals published today.

People including those with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or very severe learning disabilities who do not have relatives or friends to speak for them will be represented by a new Independent Mental Capacity Advocate.

The scheme will help people make difficult decisions about medical treatment or changes to residence.

The Department of Health made the announcement as it published the results of its consultation on how the scheme should be run.
