The General Social Care Council is considering 375 applications for registration from qualified social workers who have declared medium- to high-risk offences, according to figures released by the regulator.

The GSCC said the applications were at "various stages" of the registration process.

It said it had refused registration to two qualified social workers on the grounds of criminal convictions, while two have been registered with conditions since the social care register was launched in England in April 2003.

Overall, 105 applications for registration have been refused to date, mainly because applicants did not have one of the approved qualifications.

The GSCC also said that 10,822 social workers currently on the register had declared low-risk offences, including motoring offences and speeding fines.

More than 80,000 social workers and social work students have registered since April 2003.
