Glasgow care staff set for big pay rise

Care staff in Glasgow are likely to receive a substantial pay increase under a council-wide workforce review, but it is unclear whether it will lead to a cut in social workers' wages.

Most of the winners in the review, which aims to tackle historic pay differences, will be low-paid staff. For instance, pay for care home workers will rise by a quarter.

Managers' posts are most likely to be downgraded under the review, but Unison's Scotland convener, Mike Kirby, said it was unclear how it would affect social workers and para-professionals.

He said: "Social work recently went through its own pay and grading review so we hope it won't have any significant effect on that."

A council spokesperson said job descriptions would change to prevent staff losing out.
