Scottish local authorities need an additional £5.5m per year to ensure foster carers do not suffer financial hardship, the Fostering Network claimed today.

A survey, published tomorrow, says the extra money is needed to provide all carers with the charity’s recommended minimum allowances.

The report reveals that carers in two-thirds of Scottish authorities are receiving an allowance below its recommended rate.

The charity has called on the Scottish executive to make the extra investment and agree a national system of allowances, based on its rates.

A national system of allowances for England was announced last month as reported by Community Care but fell below the levels recommended by the Fostering Network.
