Day centre jobs in Wiltshire may go

Up to 40 per cent of staff working in Wiltshire Council’s day centres for people with learning difficulties could lose their jobs under restructuring plans, a union leader has claimed.

Janet Dapson, secretary of Unison’s Wiltshire Council branch, said the council was proposing 26 job cuts in learning difficulties centres and 46 overall in adults’ services.

Wiltshire plans to shut five day centres for people with learning difficulties and replace them with at least eight smaller settings over the next 18 months.

It will also close a day centre for older people in Trowbridge but will develop four specialist day services.

The council declined to comment on the figures, saying it was “far too soon to be talking about any specific redundancies”.
