STAR RATING: 4/5
Self-esteem is the basis for an individual’s well-being. People who value themselves and who recognise their own skills are likely to live fulfilling and rewarding lives, writes Sharon Rushworth.
This A4-size book with photocopiable activity sheets is a resource for either one-to-one or group work.
It is written at a basic level using Maslow’s theory of self actualisation to show that selfesteem is important for well-being. Following on from the theory and practical background (which take up only 40 of the 261 pages) are chapters covering a range of self-esteem activities. These cover issues such as change, acceptance, stress management, problem-solving and setting goals.
There are 144 pages of activity sheets, which you will be able to dip in and out of. I particularly like the information sheets on relaxation which include breathing exercises and imagining techniques.
The book can be used as a full course in itself, with the final worksheet being an evaluation of the course. A useful book for anyone working with people who have low self-esteem.
Sharon Rushworth is a co-ordinator of a Healthy Living Centre in Bradford
