A Welsh assembly committee has been told to examine the lack of specific services for young homeless people, after announcing a review into the group. The assembly’s social justice and regeneration committee is to visit youth homelessness projects in Colwyn Bay and Newport over thenext few months.

Carl Chapple, director of Homeless Link Cymru , said the committee needed to address the shortage in specific services for
young people and unfairness in the housing benefit system that prevents those aged under 25 from receiving adequate support.

He added: “Even in Cardiff there’s not enough specialist youth provision. There are sufficient numbers to warrant a dedicated service.”

Meanwhile, a new report compiled from 134 interviews in four regions published by charity Wallich  Clifford found that more than two thirds of homeless people in Welsh rural communities were under 30.
