The British Institute of Learning Disabilities has produced a code of practice that will help deliver training programmes for physical interventions, writes Matt Dore.

The introduction spells out why such a code is needed. Each section is written in point form, crossed referenced and is easy to follow. Given the nature of a code of practice, it is to be used with and documents that are referenced in the guide.

It is pretty much free of legal and political jargon. This is highlighted in the health and safety section where there is very sound instructions. In dividing the guide into eight sections (policies, best interest criteria, techniques for physical intervention, health and safety, course organisation, monitoring performance, evaluation and record keeping, professional conduct).
 
BILD consulted several statutory, independent and voluntary organisations as well as schools, regulatory bodies and trainers.

For those who wish to improve  their training programmes in the area of physical interventions then this will ensure a thorough and safe experience for all concerned.

A key point is the outcomes for the people who are on the receiving end of physical interventions: their wellbeing and safety must be given the same importance as the person doing the physical intervention.
