Mental health trusts outperformed by acute sector on medicines management

A person in the care of a mental health trust is more likely to have problems with their medicine than a patient in an acute trust, according to a critical report published by the health watchdog today.

The Healthcare Commission study says more must be done to improve the management of service users’ medicine in NHS mental health trusts, and says it tends to be inferior to that found in acute trusts.

Resource constraints and "a lack of appreciation of the importance of medicines management at board level appears to be a problem" in many mental health trusts, the report concludes.
