‘Good behaviour’ incentives for drug addicts backed

Rewarding positive behaviour by people who abuse drugs can help aid their recovery, charity Phoenix Futures said today.

Responding to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence’s draft guidelines on drug abuse which mooted that incentives such as food vouchers might encourage addicts to remain in treatment, the charity said there was “clear evidence” this could work.

Though Phoenix Futures admitted that such a move could be controversial, the benefits may outweigh the costs.

The Nice guidelines were launched for consultation earlier this month.
