Although clear, concise and methodical, the authors have, inevitably, had to make compromises, writes Julian Budden.

One important area overlooked is the issue of consent. For people at day centres or respite care, who have to rely on others to help them go to the toilet and therefore whose bowels are regularly "open to the public", there is no mention of the right to choose who supports them.

Neither is there any mention of the right to be treated with dignity and respect. This highlights the one shortcoming with the book: a sense it has been written in isolation with little thought given to the real world.

But it remains useful because there is scant attention paid to the issue of continence for people with a learning difficulty.

That alone is justification for this book.
