The government has announced an extra £2million of funding for drugs service to help reduce the number of people dying from drug overdoses or contracting blood-borne viruses this week.
 
The new drug Harm Reduction Action Plan, published by the Department of Health, aims to get more effective treatment for drug users and more support for rehabilitation and abstinence schemes.
 
The UK has the highest rate of drug-related death in Europe, with 1,506 deaths occurring in 2005, according to the latest official figures.

 
Earlier this week, research by charity Turning Point found that one in fifty injecting drug users were HIV positive, while half had hepatitis C.
