Association of Directors of Adult Social Services president Anne Williams warned providers this week that they had to adapt to the changing requirements of social care services, driven by the increased personalisation of care.

In a speech to the National Care Forum, the representative body for not-for-profit providers, Williams said failing to work in partnership with other providers or supply good quality information on services to users, carers and the public “will simply not be realistic options” in future.

She also called for more robust monitoring of services by councils, for instance by using “mystery shoppers”, but added that authorities and providers should work together to develop new services that met users’ needs.

Her comments follow a report this month from the government’s Office for Disability Issues identifying resistance among staff and providers to reshaping services to promote independent living for disabled people.
