The Children's Workforce Development Council has issued separate guidance for managers and practitioners on implementing the lead professional role for children.

Lead professionals' function is to co-ordinate the care of children with additional needs who require multiple services, and act as a single point of contact for the child or family.

The government sees it as a key plank of its Every Child Matters agenda, in terms of integrating support for children and avoiding duplication.

The practitioners' guidance outlines the skills required for the job and the support professionals can expect from managers, for instance in terms of managing caseloads.

The managers' guidance covers arrangements for implementing the role across localities, including clarifying the accountability of lead professionals and ensuring they receive adequate support to fulfil the role.
