Many older people are not getting foot care because of increasing “rationing” of NHS chiropody services, according to a report by Age Concern out today.
Many primary care trusts are withdrawing basic nail cutting services completely, and only people with major problems are getting access to services because of restrictive eligibility criteria, the report Feet for Purpose says.
It argues that underfunding of foot care services is leaving many older people housebound, isolated and susceptible to falls.
Age Concern is calling for an end to the “postcode lottery” of chiropody services and for local authorities and primary care trusts to undertake a comprehensive assessment of foot care needs.
