Developers of extra care housing need to consider how they can provide care and support services for residents outside of working hours, says a report published the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
The study, funded by the research body, has highlighted a number of measures planners should consider in order to promote the well-being of those living in in specialist schemes providing housing and care onsite.
Researchers carried out 36 in-depth interviews with residents from six extra care housing scheme between April 2006 and March 2007 and found most people were happy with their overall quality of life.
But it found residents wanted care and support outside core hours of work and volunteers and local people were becoming involved in civilities provided by the schemes.
Restaurants and shops were also important to residents' well being because they offered opportunities for social interaction.
