The inquest into the death of care leaver Daniel Nelson in custody began today.

Daniel, 18, was found hanging in his cell while on remand at Doncaster young offender institution in September 2005.

Just nine days before he died, Daniel was put on a self-harm form after telling a health care nurse that there were hanging ropes under his bed.

Daniel had been in care since 1999 and was still subject to a Pathway Plan through social services.

When his personal adviser discovered Daniel was in custody, they made an appointment to see him on 25 September – by which time he was dead.

Deborah Coles, co-director charity INQUEST said: “This is a tragic case which highlights our concerns about the use of imprisonment for vulnerable young people. We hope that the coroner will examine the serious issues raised by Daniel’s time in the health care centre at Doncaster YOI in detail.”

The inquest is due to take place at Doncaster Law Courts.
