The fund, which comes within the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit (qv) assists the 88 most deprived authorities to improve services and to narrow the gap between deprived areas and the rest of the country. The money can be spent in any ways that tackle deprivation. Emphasis is placed on spending on mainstream services, such as schools, where service quality is at risk or in need of improvement. The fund can be used to support services provided by other than the local authority. The fund spent £1.875 billion in 2001-2006 and the Spending Review in 2004 made another £1.05 billion available in 2006-2008.
