The task force succeeded one of the best known and earliest of the new departmental agencies, the Social Exclusion Unit, in June 2006 and has a much lower profile. It retains a very similar remit: to improve government action to reduce social exclusion by producing “joined-up solutions to joined-up problems”.
It is smaller than its predecessor and sits within the Cabinet Office. It concentrates on preventative policies for hard to reach children and families deemed to have been immune from the government’s drives against social exclusion to date. It is pledged to evidence-based policy making and “giving a voice to the disadvantaged in government”.
