The General Social Care Council has revealed that thousands of social workers missed last week's deadline to renew their registration, and now have seven days to comply.
The GSCC said today it would be writing to practitioners who had missed the 1 April deadline after latest figures revealed that 8,000 of 40,000 social workers had not completed the re-registration process with the social care register.
Illegal
Since 1 April 2005, it has been illegal to practice as a social worker in England without up-to-date registration with the GSCC, under protection of title. Last month, Community Care reported that the GSCC had hired temporary staff to manage 400 to 500 renewal applications a day. Last week, GSCC chief executive Mike Wardle said the introduction of regulation should enable social workers to “take their place as equals among other professions”, in an article to mark the third anniversary of protection of title.
