Leonard Cheshire Disability assistant director of policy and campaigns John Knight has been appointed to the General Social Care Council ruling body as one of its lay members.
Knight, who is himself disabled, is one of three new appointees to the council, alongside independent disability and equalities consultant Haqeeq Bostan, who also joins as a lay member, and Hilary Tompsett.
Tompsett is head of the school of social work at Kingston University & St George's, University of London, and chair of the learning and teaching committee of the joint university council social work education committee. As a social work professional, she will join as a non-lay member on the council, which carries a lay majority.
Knight also serves as a commissioner on the Commission for Social Care Inspection and on the management board of the government's Office for Disability Issues.
All three have been appointed for four years, from 1 September, and will receive £7,765 a year for the role. They will replace Christine Barton, Tanzeem Ahmed and June Thoburn, the current GSCC vice-chair, who all step down at the end of the month.
