Equality and Human Rights Commission

The CEHR is a non-departmental government body which began work in October 2008 when it took over all the powers of the Equal Opportunities Commission, the Commission for Racial Equality and the Disability Rights Commission. It also gained new powers to enforce legislation. Its purposes are to reduce inequality, to eliminate discrimination, to promote good relations between people, and to protect human rights.

UK equivalents: The HRC covers Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland has a Human Rights Commission established under the Northern Ireland Act.
