Journalists' magazine Press Gazette has agreed to publish a letter from Community Care protesting the decision to shortlist The Sun's Baby P coverage for a gong at its annual awards ceremony.
The Sun has been shortlisted for the British Press Awards' "campaign of the year". The result will be announced at a black tie awards ceremony next Tuesday at the five-star Grosvenor House hotel in London's Mayfair.
Community Care's letter argued that The Sun's coverage scapegoated social workers and misinformed its readers by falsely suggesting there was no accountability in social work. It called on Press Gazette to remove The Sun from the shortlist.
Community Care has also written personally to the 81 judges and the chair of the awards, Society of Editors executive director Bob Satchwell, explaining why they should vote against The Sun.
The judges are influential members of the media and many are editors of national publications. As well as pointing out why The Sun's coverage was inaccurate, Community Care's letter also alerted them to our campaign to improve the coverage of social work issues in the media.
