The Department for Children, Schools and Families will publish an action plan on remodelling the children's workforce in the late autumn.

It is expected to look at areas including training, skills, recruitment and retention.

Kevin Brumfitt, director of the Children's Workforce Development Council, told a Care and Health conference yesterday that the plan would be based on ideas from a focus group of 12 professionals.

The CWDC is currently inviting local authorities and private and voluntary sector organisations to bid to run 18 pilots remodelling children's social work.

Brumfitt said the pilots would look at "innovative" practice that freed up social workers to undertake more direct work with children.

Children's secretary Ed Balls is due to make a speech at the Labour party conference later today.
