Darling condemned over failure to address child poverty in budget
Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling have today come under fire from their own side for failing to do more to end child poverty.
John McFall, the respected and usually loyal chairman of the Treasury select committee, has criticised the government for failing to make mention of its pledge to end child poverty by 2020 in this year's budget.

Questions remain as family courts open to press
Thousands of family courts are opened to the media for the first time today, amid fears that stringent reporting restrictions will make a mockery of the reform.
Britain’s most senior family judge, Sir Mark Potter, has warned that courts will face a deluge of media applications to report cases and see documents, which could lead to a “damaging” inconsistency of approach by courts.

Campaigners warn of new generation of "latchkey kids" over plans to get single mothers back to work A new generation of "latchkey kids" is being created by plans to get single mothers back to work, it was claimed last night.
Campaign group Gingerbread said from October new rules will mean 68,000 people with children over 10 will go on Jobseeker's Allowance instead of Income Support. A year later those with youngsters over seven will join them. It means they lose benefits unless they try to find work.
