Helping one million disabled adults who are economically inactive but who want to get back into work would be one way of addressing the pensions crisis, according to Paul Holmes MP.

The Liberal Democrat spokesperson for work and disability told Community Care LIVE that he had spent the previous two days debating in parliament the growing imbalance between the number of older people drawing pensions and the number of people in work.

He said that providing help for disabled people would "go some way" towards redressing the imbalance. There would be significant cost implications, but he added that it was necessary to counteract a history of underfunding in this area.

"The UK would have to increase its spending on helping disabled people back into work by 500 per cent to reach the European average," Holmes said.
