Go On Then Make Inclusion Work

Institute for Citizenship. Price £25 plus £3 p&p. Contact 01904 654557 or catherine@citizen.org.uk

Highly recommended, this innovative and creative video and reader deals with the inclusion of special needs children in mainstream schools, writes child protection training & development officer, Adele Weir. Involving collaboration from Connexions, NSPCC and the Children's Society, the pack uses the views of young people to identify potential problems and solutions. It recognises the difficulties that inclusion may present for children as well as school staff. Although the sound quality on the video could be better, the reader is excellent, including fact sheets and suggested exercises for both young people and school staff in designing a school action plan. I particularly liked the exercises for young people, which should raise awareness and engage them in accepting responsibility for playing a part in making inclusion work alongside school staff.

Supporting Older People with Dementia in Sheltered Housing

Annette McDonald. Published by Pavilion. £75 plus £7.50 p&p. Contact: 01273 623222; www.pavpub.com

This training pack provides valuable information and guidance to managers of sheltered housing schemes about offering support to older people with dementia, writes regional training and development manager, Caroline Morris. The pack starts with an insight into the myths and misconceptions surrounding dementia, including ageism, facts about dementia and living in sheltered housing. Subsequent sessions offer further practical suggestions on issues such as the value of possessions, aggression and supporting people. Practical and innovative exercises can be used as training resources and learning outcomes are linked to the relevant NVQs. This is an excellent resource.
