Recognising the warning signs

Feelings of failure or hopelessness.

Monday 28 January 2008 14:38
  • Feelings of failure or hopelessness.

  • Talking about suicide. It's a myth that those who talk about suicide don’t go through with it. Most people who take their own lives have talked about it to someone.

  • Suddenly making a will or taking out life insurance.

  • Giving away belongings

  • A marked change of behaviour. Someone may appear calm for the first time or, more commonly, may become withdrawn.

  • Problems sleeping.

  • Taking less care of appearance or diet

  • There is a risk when someone is recovering from depression. They may have the energy to kill themselves that they lacked when depressed.

Note: Not all warning signs will be evident. Unfortunately, there are instances where there is hardly any indication that someone intends taking their own life.
