The government has published the remit and duties of the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI), which will supercede the National Care Standards Commission in April next year.

The CSCI will also take on the work of the Social Services Inspectorate, and the joint review team.

Health minister Lord Hunt also announced details of the Commission for Health Care Audit and Inspection, which will work closely with the CSCI.

The two new commissions will:

- Strengthen the accountability of those responsible for the commissioning and delivery of health and social services
- Demonstrate to the public how the additional money being invested in these services is being spent, and enable them to judge how performance is improving as a result
- Streamline inspection arrangements for health and social care
