A report into the government’s troubled regeneration initiative New Deal for Communities will be published next month, according to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, writes Sally Gillen.

The evaluation of the £2bn flagship programme, which was launched four years ago to improve 39 deprived neighbourhoods across England, has been beset by problems.

Five of the partnerships, including those in London, Birmingham and Nottingham, have faced problems because of disagreements between board members.

A spokesperson for the ODPM said: “Inevitably with such an imaginative and ambitious programme some NDCs are experiencing teething troubles and some local communities are taking time to work things out and get new systems up and running.”

He added that the government was “working closely” with the partnerships that were struggling.
