Leaders in social care are hopeful that the new chief executive of the General Social Care Council, Mike Wardle, will be able to help steer the sector through the government’s change agenda.
Wardle took over as acting chief executive after Lynne Berry left to join voluntary services organisation WRVS.
He originally joined the GSCC in 2001 after working in the Civil Service and as principal private secretary to former education ministers David Blunkett and Estelle Morris.
After Wardle's appointment last Wednesday, Sir Rodney Brooke, GSCC chair, said: “The new social care agenda will require substantial change from the GSCC, and Mike is well fitted to lead it during this period.”
Skills for Care said the appointment was “good news” for the social care sector and Andrea Rowe, its chief executive officer, said: “Mike has exactly the right mix of experience and strategic thinking that we believe will help us make sure social care workers are well trained and fully supported to meet the challenges of the move to greater personalised care.”
