The majority of parents believe the most important change the government could make to support them would be to make flexible working a right, according to a new poll.

The poll for the National Family and Parenting Institute’s Family Friendly campaign found that more support for teenagers was their second priority for government.

In terms of local changes, the most popular was more police on the streets, followed by a 20mph speed limit in residential areas. Half the parents in the poll believe that government does not listen to the needs of parents and children.

NFPI is calling on the government to introduce extended, paid parental leave, the right to flexible working and the removal of bank holidays from the four-week minimum leave entitlement.

The Institute, set up by the Home Office in 1999, is also proposing more affordable, quality child care, a 20mph speed limit in residential areas, and better access to travel for children and young people.
