| It is now one month since the smoking ban was introduced. What has the impact been on your work, your workplace and on service users? | |||||

The smoking ban has resulted in our company focusing further on the importance of recruitment for all our new Clients - the recruitment process, although always considering smoking requirements, now makes it very clear which clients smoke and attempts to mactch carers to this (as well as all other carer requirements!) To date this hasn't had too much of an impact; unlike current clients and carers in place! The stand off that has occured between the rights of our Clients and the rights of our carers is a difficult one to juggle - who's rights are more important? The Client to smoke in their own home, when smoking is often the only 'normal' activity left, or the carer who is entitled not to work in an environment that is detrimental to their health? As a company we are limited to how far we can manage this although negoation and forward planning have been a great asset in ensuring the majority of inviduals are happy. It has definitely affected the continuity of care for some clients where carers have taken their legal right to move to non-smoking clients. It is disappointing that yet again policy makers have ignored the impact on the social care industry (service users and workers alike) when determining legislation - perhaps instead of insisting that care providers and local authorities should plan ahead or put in place innovative policies the policy makers should start by considering the needs of all, rather than the who is most prominant.

I understand the difficult priorities you have to juggle but I think the no-smoking policy is right. No worker should have to suffer damage to their health while going about their job. It may be inconvenient for some people to stop smoking while their carer is in the house with them but I don't think there is any other option. If it is good enough for bar staff it is surely good enough for social care staff. |
