Northumbria Police have launched a murder investigation following the deaths of three women at a private care home in Gateshead.

A female care worker was arrested on suspicion of murder and later released on bail following the death of Alice Grant at Aidan House earlier this month. A post-mortem showed Grant died due to the unlawful administration of drugs. Two more deaths of the home's residents are being investigated and one body has been exhumed.

Andrea Spence, manager of owners Manor Care Home Group, said everyone was "devastated." Detective Superintendent Chris Symonds said: "There is no evidence to suggest any link between the deaths but we have to examine the circumstances in which these two women died."
