Kadress Sawmy, a former home care organiser who was sacked three days after alleging he was the subject of racial discrimination, won his case against Newport Council last week.

The council told the employment tribunal that Sawmy had lied about his qualifications and given a false name after being dismissed from Torfaen Council and, in 1983, from Gwent Council.

Although Sawmy had failed to prove that he was treated less favourably than his white colleague, the tribunal was concerned at the short time between his claim of discrimination and his sacking, given that the council had known about the alleged discrepancies on his application form for some weeks before his dismissal.
